Delicious diversion

I’m obsessed with beautiful hand dyed silk, so even when I’m taking a break, I don’t veer off too far from my original obsession. Getting the chance to touch, stitch and play with a little kit for making a beautiful hand dyed silk arashi shibori ribbon flower from Glennis Dolce (aka Shibori Girl) was a real kick. You can find the link to her blog in my textile links on the right side bar.

I had a fun time even just taking pictures of the resulting flower. The resilient pleating makes the fabric so sculpturally fascinating! I could have honestly spent hours making a picture study of close ups of the play between its various folds, ridges and silky, milky texture. Delicious.

It’s a beautiful little thing, isn’t it?

There’s virtually no information out there that I could find about taking pics of fabric. Crepe the Chine is easy as it’s opaque and matte, but I’ve found that lustrous glossy silk has major problems. Anything shiny, you get too much light bouncing off of it and lose the accurate coloration. If it’s sheer, the light passing through the fabric makes you lose the details of the pattern.

It’s been hit and miss, with lots of shots just get one sometimes that most closely resembles what the eye can see.

I have to admit that most of the serious photography technical info goes way over my head, so that certainly slows me down. If somebody wanted to write a book for the layman aimed at textile artists showing their work, there’s a niche market ready for them!
